Vembanad Lake is the biggest backwater in Kerala. Kuttanad spreads over the land of the back waters. More or less half of the area in Kuttanad is lying below sea level. The rivers Pamba, Muvattupuzha, Meenachil, Manimala and Achankovil flow through Kuttanad and join the Vembanad Lake. Since Kuttanad is immersed in backwater, it was not suitable for cultivation. Through the continuous efforts the people there made the land cultivable. With the construction of bund and in draining of land, they could make the land rich in agriculture
